The Basics
What is ODR?
Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) is the settling of disputes outside court, over the internet. Notices go out by email, SMS and WhatsApp, hearings happen on video, and documents are signed electronically — so a dispute can be resolved faster, at lower cost, without anyone travelling.
The four methods
Negotiation
The parties talk directly and agree a settlement themselves.
Mediation
A neutral mediator helps the parties reach their own settlement. Nothing is imposed.
Conciliation
A conciliator suggests terms of settlement, which the parties may accept or reject.
Arbitration
An independent arbitrator hears both sides and passes an award that binds them.
